What is a string quartet?

A string quartet is one of the common types of quartet

It is usually made up of

  • 2 violins
  • viola
  • cello

The instruments are often chosen for their representation of the registers of the human voice:

  • Soprano and alto — violins
  • Tenor — viola
  • Bass — cello.

What do they play?

String quartets play music especially written for a string quartet.
